Lava Iris X8 - Flagship Android Smartphone in Mid Budget

Lava Iris X8 launched in Feb 2015 is a flagship product of Indian brand Lava. Iris X8 is available in two different variant 2GB RAM w/ 16GB ROM and 1GB RAM with 8GB ROM. Also available in two different color varianta Black and White.

Build -
Build wise Iris X8 resemble the iphone 4 but with a 12.7cm IPS touchscreen. Its 5" screen is protected with Ashai glass. I have the black variant which is circled by light-golden color rim (bezel) which adore its add luster to it. Also the buttons, grills, ports are very carefully crafted, the LAVA, IRIS X8 is very lightly branded which might disappoint you a bit. Anyway the phone looks premium in hand, bit heavy in weight but not for pocket.

The only problem which I have faced with it is that it rusted a little from the bezel edge, however the phone looks very premium in hand in comparison to the on-net pictures. Also I recommend you to buy a flip cover (whichever you like to).

Camera -
Iris X8 sports a 10MP (mentioned as 8MP) primary camera with auto focus, BSI sensor and dual LED flash and a 3MP secondary camera with fixed focus. Performance wise the camera is average but capture decent photos in natural light. Does not perform well in low light but noise is little but still noticeable. Supports HD (1280x720) recording with 15-20fps (in actual).

Software -
Comes with AOSP Android Kitkat 4.4.2 Installed, upgrade is in question till now, you can download the latest Android v5.1 from within settings > about > update or from here. and provide some useful tweak inside. Some extra usefull apps - WPS office suite, Facebook and Mynotes Installed. Also tweaks include - Flip Cover support, Smart Gestures, Float Task and Lock screen themes (default and with video).

Memory -
Comes with 2GB primary memory and 16GB internal memory. On first boot you will get around 1.5MB free RAM and around 13GB free ROM. Stock ROM advantage it to provide as much free RAM as possible. The phone never hangs (literally around 2 or 3 times) in 5 months of usage. Pretty much better than other namey smartphones.

Hardware -
MediaTek MT6592 chipset 1.36GHz, 8x Arm Cortex A7 processor with Mali 450MP GPU performs operation fast and seamlessly.
Best for android game lovers, I have played Asphalt 8, Asphalt nitro, GTA SA, GTA VC, Shadowgun deadzone, Dead trigger, MC5 and few other specy and spacey games. Work wells on mid to high setting, yes of course a little frame drops on high setting which is common but still acceptable. After all it just 8K phone.

Battery -
A 2500mAH Li-polymer, non removable battery. Battery last for 8-10 hours on moderate usage. Though it comes with fast charge option, the battery charges from 0% to 15% in no time. Also you can enable CPU optimization from battery settings to make it last longer. The battery start performing a but poor after upgrading to android v5.1 so its better to not upgrade or follow the below guide.

Here are the two guides which will help you to extend battery life.

Gaming & Overall Performance -
I have played GTA San Andreas and Subway Surfer to test its performance. GTA SA with high visuals, full resolution, medium shadow and class resolution works lagless. Subway surfer working great around 560-60fps in gameplay after root (checked using GLTool). Browsing is fast and internet (both 3G and WiFi) working fast, can load memory hogging website without any performance degrade. But still have some flaws too - sometime lags on fast pace games like temple run 2 and relic run. Afterall it cost Rs.8200 only.

Downs -
Every phone has its drawbacks so Iris X8.

  • Low loudspeaker sound - the phone comes with low sound by default. You can use this trick to amplify its loudspeaker sound.
  • No hardware level surround support - Device does not packed with any hardware level enhancement which makes it earphone sound dull. Not suggested for music lovers, but if you can compromise with audio quality over hardware (like me) then you better go for it.
  • Non-removable battery - A big problem if you're battery damage after warranty period. The other problem is hanging but there is a way to deal with it, read here
  • There are few other but negotiable.
Verdict -
Even the device comes with its drawback, the phone also packed top level hardware's. The choice of packing Mediatek chipset with Adreno CPU and with 2GB RAM is appreciable which provides optimal performance in charge of battery and does not heat at all. The overall specifications makes it good budget device for serious gamers. Also the OTG support works as a right hand of this phone.
